Spring: the best season for excursions
From April to June, temperatures are mild, the countryside is still green and archaeological sites can be visited in excellent conditions. It's the ideal time for Dougga, El Jem, Kairouan or Zaghouan, where summer can be gruelling.
The sea stays cool until June, but the days are long and bright. In Cap Bon, it's also orange blossom season.
Summer: all about the sea
In July and August, it's hot on the coast and very hot inland: in Kairouan or El Jem, the thermometer often climbs above 35 °C in the afternoon. The sea, on the other hand, is at its best.
Choose coastal excursions (Cap Bon, Sousse and Monastir, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd) or set off very early for the major sites so you can finish your visits before midday.
Autumn: the insider's season
From September to November, the sea keeps its summer warmth and temperatures become pleasant again for sightseeing. It's an excellent time to combine the beach with cultural excursions.
A few storms can break out from October onwards, usually short-lived. With a private driver, it's easy to move an excursion by a day if the weather demands it.
Winter: mild and peaceful
From December to February, the climate remains mild on the coast, with often sunny days, but also spells of rain and wind. The sites are almost deserted and the winter light is superb.
It's the right time for long cultural visits: Tunis and the Bardo, Dougga, Kairouan. Bring a jacket for the evenings, which are cooler than you might expect.
Ramadan and public holidays
During the month of Ramadan, whose dates change every year, the sites stay open but some restaurants close during the day and the pace of life slows in the afternoon. The evenings, on the other hand, are very lively in the medinas.
On Friday lunchtimes, many shops in the souks close during the main prayer: plan your medina visits accordingly.
In short
- April to June: ideal for all excursions
- July-August: the sea and coastal sites, very early departures
- September to November: warm sea and pleasant sightseeing
- December to March: quiet cultural sites, bring a jacket
