Monastir: what to see and which excursions to take?

Monastir at a glance

Monastir is a well-kept coastal town about twenty kilometres south of Sousse. It owes a great deal to Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president, who was born and is buried here.

The tourist area lies mainly towards Skanès, to the north, between the town and the airport. Many holidaymakers arrive here directly, as the international airport is just minutes from the hotels.

What to see in town

The Ribat of Harthema, founded in the late 8th century, is one of the oldest and best-preserved in the Maghreb. Its golden ramparts by the water have served as a film set several times, including for Monty Python's "Life of Brian". Climb the tower for views along the coast.

Nearby, the esplanade leads to the Bourguiba Mausoleum, with its golden domes and twin minarets. The small, peaceful medina and the marina, where you can dine overlooking the boats, round off the visit.

The best day trips from Monastir

El Jem is about an hour's drive away, Kairouan a little more: our Line 2 combines both in a single day. Line 5 takes in Monastir, Sousse and Port El Kantaoui, handy if you're staying in Skanès without a car.

Friguia Park is about an hour away. For Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd, allow about two hours on the motorway; for Dougga or Cap Bon, it's best to set off early.

Practical information

Habib Bourguiba Airport is about 10 minutes from the town and the Skanès hotels. A suburban train, the Sahel Metro, links Monastir with Sousse and Mahdia.

Pick-up is at your hotel, in Monastir or Skanès, at no extra cost.
