Zaghouan and the Berber Village of Zriba

Duration : 6 h 15 Drive : 1 h drive Pick-up at your hotel Private excursion

An authentic day out in nature: the abandoned Berber village of Zriba Olia clinging to its mountainside, then Zaghouan, its flower-filled medina and the Temple of the Waters, which supplied Carthage via a 130 km aqueduct.

The excursion

An hour west of Hammamet, Jebel Zaghouan towers over the plain. Clinging to its slopes, the Berber village of Zriba Olia was abandoned in the 1970s: its dry-stone houses, mosque and alleyways offer a spectacular view over the valley and a rare glimpse of rural Tunisia as it once was.

Below, the small town of Zaghouan hides a remarkable monument: the Temple of the Waters, a 2nd-century Roman nymphaeum where the 130 km aqueduct supplying Carthage began. The medina, known for its roses and wild-rose blossom, is also the home of kaak warka, an almond pastry found almost nowhere else.

This private excursion is ideal for getting off the beaten track, doing a little walking and discovering a more authentic Tunisia, without straying far from Hammamet.
